The Veil-Renderers are a splinter of the Deep Choir — more activist, more willing to operate in daylight, focused specifically on the prophetic work of triggering the Rising Deep rather than the slow patient work of building influence. They are newer, more fanatical, and less disciplined. The Deep Choir regards them with a mixture of approval (their energy is useful) and concern (their impatience could compromise operations that have been decades in the making).
Structure & Ranks:
- The Prophet of the Void
A shadowy figure of serene madness. Rarely speaks aloud. Their presence brings psychic discomfort: hearing static, feeling pressure in the skull, smelling the sea indoors. Wears ceremonial robes stitched with ink made from Leviathan blood.
- The Unseeing (High Priests)
Eyes ritually removed and replaced with barnacle-covered coral masks. They “see” through magical echolocation. Tasked with interpreting the will of the Void.
- The Whispered (Apostles)
Recruited from surface dwellers or fallen merrow. These cultists act as field leaders, spies, and ambassadors. Often wear “skinshrouds” made from deep-sea creatures or kelp.
- The Riven (Common Cultists)
These initiates undergo a ritual drowning in black alae brine. Survivors return changed, sometimes unable to speak anything but Deep Speech. They serve as foot soldiers and ritual support.
Symbols & Iconography:
- A spiral eye crossed with jagged, broken lines (often drawn in ash, ichor, or sea salt).
- Stylized kraken tentacles encircling a hollow circle (the void).
- Masks of bleached coral, glass, and bone, all obscuring the face.
Tactics & Abilities:
- Use psychic magic, illusions, and shadow spells that twist reality.
- Fight alongside corrupted sea creatures.
Their Rituals:
- Rendering Ceremonies: Performed to “cut” through the world’s veil.
- Abyssal Baptism: New recruits are submerged in dark water laced with black algae.
- The Unveiling: An elite rite where a Whispered has their name and history erased, gaining a new persona.
