Session Narrative
Silverbend is a riverside village of perhaps three hundred souls, known for its excellent fishing and a local legend about a ‘water mother’ who protects the crossing. Nobody thinks the legend is relevant until they find the footprints in the riverbank mud leading straight to the water’s edge.
Investigation at the dock and along the riverbank assembles a picture: Sable was not taken by random chance. Her footprints show hesitation, then apparent willingness — as though she went toward the water of her own accord before something in the water came the rest of the way. The Grindylows — river creatures, amphibious, cruel, fond of dragging things under — attack the investigating party on approach to the crossing, and the fight is quick but brutal.
Following the trail across the river and into the wood, the party finds Sable in a mossy clearing, seated before a Grindylow Chieftain named Mistcurl. Mistcurl is not what they expected: ancient, weirdly dignified, possessed of information. He has not harmed Sable. He has been telling her things.
What Mistcurl knows: a former Germonian monarch made a deal with Dagon, Prince of the Darkened Deep, and then broke it. Dagon intends to collect the debt, and Sable — heir to Germonia — is the price. Furthermore, Queen Snow White of Germonia, Sable’s mother, may already know this. She may be planning to hand her daughter over in order to renegotiate the terms on her own behalf.
The party defeats Mistcurl and rescues Sable, though ‘rescue’ requires a conversation with a thirteen-year-old who is now staring at them with the expression of someone deciding whether to trust them with the worst thing she knows.
Returning to the ship, they find the crew acting with glassy-eyed strangeness. Investigation reveals: Sy the cook’s stewpot is cursed, and whatever entered the stewpot has spread to the ship itself. Captain Windreaver, unmoved by supernatural complications that don’t directly affect her navigation, directs them to the village of Sen, where a wizard named Brother Ansel can help.

DM Notes
This session reframes the entire Germonia mission. The party is not delivering Sable to safety — they are potentially delivering her to danger with the appearance of safety. Sable’s trust in Bambi, established in Session 11, now becomes morally loaded. The cursed ship is a good comic-horror beat; don’t let it overshadow Mistcurl’s revelations.
