Micchu

The Crown of the Boundless Blue — The Realm of the Living Sun — The Golden Terraces

“The sea surrounds us, but the sun chose us. The mountains do not ask the waves for permission to reach the sky.”

Geography and Environment

Rising abruptly from the churning waters of the Boundless Blue and the Cerulean Sea, the island of Micchu is a dramatic landscape of steep vertical ridges, cloud-forest peaks, and verdant rainforest valleys. Its lower coastlines feature hidden sea coves, sheer cliff walls, and dense jungle canopies that open up into thousands of intricately carved agricultural stone terraces.

Connecting these jagged peaks is an extensive network of woven suspension bridges, dizzying switchback trails, and massive stone aqueducts that channel alpine spring water through every tier of cultivation. At the island’s highest altitude sits the Sun Palace, a sprawling mountain-top complex of gilded ceremonial courtyards, thermal royal bathhouses, solar observatories, and dizzying terraces overlooking the boundless expanse of ocean below.

History and Cosmology

In the broader history of Once, Micchu was established during the age when mortal tribes dispersed across the oceans following the early conflicts between the primal pantheons and the One God. While continental kingdoms organized around strict feudal hierarchies or fey covenants, the settlers of Micchu carved an isolated, self-sustaining theocratic sanctuary into the vertical cliffs.

The island’s culture developed along two intertwined spiritual lines. The imperial theocracy organized around the worship of Inti and the solar pantheon, viewing the sovereign as a direct living incarnation of the sun itself. Alongside this court religion flourished an older, grassroots devotion to the Pachamama, the Earth Mother. Guided by village shamans, this faith incorporated primal fey traditions, earth shrines, and mountain spirit appeasement to ensure fertile harvests of corn, potatoes, and rare herbs amidst difficult terrain.

For centuries, Micchu remained intentionally insulated from mainland wars, relying on dangerous coastal currents, treacherous mountain geography, and abundant natural veins of raw gold and jade to remain completely self-sufficient.

Government and Daily Life

Micchu operates as an absolute dynastic theocracy centered within the Sun Palace. In theory, the Emperor’s word is divine law, and imperial decrees dictate everything from seasonal festivals to civic labor. In practice, the everyday administration of the empire relies on local village leaders known as Kurakas, who manage agrarian collectives, maintain the mountain aqueducts, and organize grain stores.

Because the sovereign often views statecraft as an unwelcome distraction, daily bureaucracy—such as regional taxation, labor levies, and border defenses—has traditionally fallen to the Council of Scribes and the Imperial Vizier. This creates a sharp divide between the cloistered luxury of the palace elite and the practical communal labor of the valley farmers.

Current Conflicts

The Sovereign’s Vanity and the Rural Revolt

The most pressing internal crisis is Emperor Kuzco’s reckless demand to seize prime generational terrace farmland to construct “Kuzcotopia,” a massive royal pleasure estate equipped with private water flumes. This threat to agrarian livelihoods has pushed the rural populace, led by the Kuraka Pacha, to the brink of open rebellion. Village elders have discussed withholding seasonal grain tributes, a move that would quickly cause famine across the lower coastal ports and collapse the fragile domestic peace.

The Alchemical Coup

Operating beneath the throne, Imperial Vizier Yzma—an ancient practitioner tracing her magic to Mal’s alchemical lineage—has grown entirely unwilling to tolerate Kuzco’s incompetence. Inside her secret subterranean laboratories, she has prepared transmutational elixirs and beast draughts to permanently incapacitate the young sovereign and claim direct rule over the empire, manipulating the political unrest to disguise her treason.

Smugglers and Outer-Sea Incursions

Micchu’s historical isolation is rapidly eroding. Foreign merchant vessels, privateers, and smugglers hailing from Tirulia and the Realm of Grimm have established covert trade outposts within the uncharted sea caves beneath the outer cliffs. These rogue traders bypass imperial authorities, exchanging gunpowder, rare mainland reagents, and forbidden magical artifacts for raw Incan gold, bringing outside planar and geopolitical tensions directly to Micchu’s doorstep.
