⚔ Session Notes Session #22

The Abyssal Trench

Location Abyssal Trench, Cerulean Sea
Players Bambi, Elora, Maevis, Ranga, Xander

Session Narrative

The descent begins at the blood pool — a place where the ocean floor gives way to a shaft of impossible depth, the water around it a deep arterial red from mineral seepage. The party enters through it, the Abyssal Endurance tattoos holding against the pressure as the light above them shrinks to a point and then vanishes.

In the total darkness of the deep ocean, bioluminescence is both beautiful and a warning. The Great Maelstrom requires navigation — the currents here are enormous, the skill challenge demanding, the penalty for failure a plunge into the black algae field where the Blind Maws wait.

The Blind Maws themselves — jet-black anglerfish with psychic lures — are a genuine threat, their telepathic screams causing confusion and panic in the confined space of the deep. The party dispatches them, perhaps with the help of the Merfolk’s Tear Gem suppressing the algae’s attractant glow.

The Watcher Below is vast — a colossal jellyfish shape moving through the water far below, its tendrils trailing for hundreds of feet, its consciousness apparently aware of them. If left undisturbed, it passes. If provoked, the consequences are entertaining and non-fatal — Bambi hears it singing in four-part harmony; Ranga spends one confused round convinced she is a seabird.

The False Tooth is a massive coral formation shaped uncannily like the real thing. Three Deep Wretches guard it — drowned sailors, immune to charm, resistant to non-magical weapons, relentless. They yield a barnacle-sealed chest: one magic item and a half-written letter addressed to ‘The Prophet.’

The Harpy’s Teat sits nearby, half-buried in the seabed. Nibbles, a young sea dragon of the Bronze variety, has claimed it as a hoard and is not aggressive about the intrusion — he wants to play. Specifically, he wants to wrestle and exchange riddles with what he calls ‘the land squishies.’ He can be charmed, puzzled, or wrestled into letting them through.

Key NPCs

  • The Watcher Below  —  Colossal jellyfish aberration. Ancient, alien, possibly kin to the First Kraken. Does not speak. Senses thoughts. Passing it requires silence and stillness.
  • Nibbles  —  Young Bronze Dragon claiming the Harpy’s Teat. Sassy, hoarding-obsessed, asks riddles. ‘What has a face, but no cheeks?’ (A clock.) Answers his own riddles if nobody else does, loudly.

DM Notes

Pacing is key in this session — the descent should feel like entering a different world. The Watcher should be mysterious and terrifying without being an obstacle. Nibbles is pure comedy relief between the horror beats; use his riddles generously. The letter from the chest is a significant plot item.
